He is a neuroscientist, professor and researcher at the Instituto de Neurobiología Ramón y Cajal, and is considered on of the most highly qualified neuroscientists in the world and the only Spanish scientist carrying out research in the field of the microanatomy of the brain. He directed the Neurolab Mission, sponsored by NASA, in which rats were launched into space to study the effects of zero gravity on their brains. He is the first Spanish scientist to receive the prestigious Krieg Cortical Kudos award from the Cajal Club in the United States.
